Mrithyu Bhaga: The Inauspicious Planetary Stations- an arist

What is Mrityu Bhaga (MB) – Its Definition and Concept-
Its applicability.

What is Mrityu Bhaga (MB):
Mrityu means death and bhaga means portion. In brief MB is the particular degree portion of planet in various sign indicating some mishaps or tragedy or troubles like death or death itself. In Sanskrit Mrityu means death but we cannot go verbatim and here we may construed it as capital punishment or disease or tragic event factor. For convenience, we call mrityu bhaga as MB.

According to our shrutis and smrutis there are various situations narrated as naraka, which is like an Mrityu, and we could construe this concept in astrology. There are 8 kinds of "death" namely Vyatha (agony / distress), Dukha (pain / hurt), Bhaya (fear), Lajja (shame), Roga-Vyaadhi (illness), Bandhana (confining / fastening), Apmaana (insult), and Mrityu, which is actual death as defined in the English dictionary. Depending on the severity of the affliction, the native may suffer from either of these.

Bhaga has two meaning in Sanskrit first is portion and other is fate. Here as MB is taken as death threatening portion of planet, Bhaga or Bhaaga spelling is considered for pronunciation and writing purpose. Bhaga also means sexual organ of female called ‘yoni’ and literally it indicates the process of fall and generation and Mrityu is a fall of life and beginning of new era of soul.

Bhaga also means ‘complete and perfect excellence’ and Mrityu of the same means trouble like death or death. Bhaga has two words ‘Bha’ and ‘ga’. ‘Bha’ means SambhaRtaa i.e. the lord who is well maintaining or nourishing the conditional and supreme soul, also it means BhaRtaa i.e. holder of the soul. Other is ‘ga’ means, (1) stimulating and/or motivating factor of body, (2) administrator of body and (3) creator of body.

Concept of MB:
Various MB tables are given in the next chapter. For example, the MB table indicates that Sun in Aries sign at 20 degree is in MB, which means that the degree portion form 19 to 20 is in MB. Though a sign is divided into 5 unequal portions in normal trimsamsa, there are variations of trimsamsa in which a sign is divided into 30 equal portions. It is believed that Mrityu Bhaaga is not a point, but a trimsamsa degree portion. When classics say that the 18th degree is Rahu's MB in Aquarius, it means that the region starting at 17 degree and ending at 18 degree is the MB of Rahu in Aquarius. That is the "18th degree", afterall!! Using mean nodes, Rahu is at 16Aq54. Using the so-called true nodes, Rahu is at 18Aq08. Either way, it is not in MB as per the definition of MB. Another school of thought takes this for one upper degree i.e. if MB of Mercury in Gemini is 13 then it starts from 13 degree and ends at 14 degree.

We will use Lahiri (chitrapaksha) Ayanamsa, topocentric and True mode of nodes to determine the MB of planet to get substantially correct results. According to my experience above or below .55 degree from MB centre be allowed to this portion of MB. Suppose Sun is in MB in Aries at 20-degree means 19 to 20 and some takes 20 to 21 and still some takes 19.30 to 20.30 degree. That is the difference of opinion, but decision is to take MB degree of 19-20.
In some case .05 means 18.55 to 20.05 degree (in above example) is safe being taken for substantial results in factual cases for post mortem only. In brief and broader sense MB apart from death infliction causes obstruction, frustration, and health challenges, bad & tragic events and so on. This can be safely extended to mean destruction as well, like hurt, conflict, violence when applied to nations or countries.

Applicability of MB:
Where ever the planet in MB sits will trouble the house, sign and planet (conjuncting-depositor-ruler) by its position and aspect. The aspect of duhasthana lord (6-8-12 H) or its asterisms on this MB planet or vice versa can cause good deal of troubles. One should be well acquainted with the attributes of planets, house and signs. We may consider this by example.
